The Construction Estimator is a pivotal role with opportunities for leadership and growth through active succession planning. The qualified candidate has project estimating and bid development experience, a background in marine or waterfront construction, and a sharp eye for field-based problem-solving in complex, high-stakes environments.

Position Overview

A Hawaii-based leader in ocean engineering and marine construction is seeking a Construction Estimator to support complex, high-impact infrastructure projects spanning piers, seawalls, mooring systems, and underwater structures. This is not a typical estimating role — it's a unique opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, divers, and builders who work at the intersection of civil engineering, coastal science, and field operations. The position was created with long-term succession in mind, offering the right candidate a clear runway to take over estimating leadership. The company self-performs the vast majority of its work and operates from a state-of-the-art waterfront headquarters in Honolulu, with active projects across Hawaii, the West Coast, Guam, and Micronesia.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and bid proposals for marine and heavy civil construction projects
  • Analyze project drawings, specifications, and documents to develop accurate scopes and pricing
  • Support preconstruction activities, subcontractor selection, and project scheduling
  • Collaborate with project managers and site teams to ensure alignment of cost and execution plans
  • Attend site visits and pre-bid meetings to assess field conditions
  • Track historical cost data and contribute to continuous estimating process improvement

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of marine or heavy civil construction methods and materials
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to analyze technical drawings and translate them into cost structures
  • Effective communication, coordination, and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with scheduling software and construction planning tools (e.g., CPM)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in construction estimating, project engineering, or preconstruction
  • Prior exposure to marine, waterfront, or heavy civil construction projects is a plus
  • Experience working with union labor teams or self-perform contractors is a plus
