Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the coordination of a student services program (yet to be named) for Native Hawaiian students in CTE programs at Honolulu Community College.
  • Writes and prepares grant applications (including researching possible grant resources) to secure extramural funding to support programming for Native Hawaiians in Career and Technical Education programs.
  • Responsible for coordinating and delivering outreach activities both on campus and in the community (e.g., class visits, hosting visiting students, attending college fairs, and visiting area high schools) to support the recruitment and retention of Native Hawaiians into the College with preference to career and technical education academic programs.
  • Works in close cooperation and collaboration with College colleagues, community organizations and leaders, and industry and workforce partners to develop and implement culturally relevant curriculum, activities, and direct services that support the recruitment, retention, graduation, and career readiness of Native Hawaiians in the College's career and technical education academic programs. Services may include, but are not limited to: academic advising, college skills development, cultural and financial literacy workshops, field trips to four-year campuses, cultural site visits, service learning activities, career advising, career skills development seminars, practicum/internship/apprenticeship placements, cooperative education, and career site visits.
  • Manages budget planning for the program, including creating an annual budget, preparing and submitting fiscal documents to procure goods and services, and expense tracking and reconciliation to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with campus procurement policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of program operational strategies and event plans and strategies to include staffing requirements and plans, budget expenditures and management, and program space and equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records and a database of student participants, including tracking academic progress, engagement, and key milestones to support program evaluation and reporting.
  • Leads and supervises program support staff and student assistants in the effective delivery of services, contingent on the availability of funds.
  • Coordinates assessment and evaluation activities, utilizing both formative and summative assessments to collect and analyze data measuring program outcomes against established goals and objectives. Uses assessment findings to inform program planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement.
  • Pending the availability of extramural funding, responsible for completing annual performance reports in accordance with funder requirements.
  • Actively participates on College committees and represents the Hawaiian Center and Kulana Hawai?i Division in meetings and campus-wide initiatives, contributing to institutional planning and decision-making to advance the missions and goals of the Center and Division.
  • Under the general supervision of the Hulili Ke Kukui Coordinator, may be asked to assist with the day-to-day on-site coordination of operations, including facility and staff scheduling, resource management, budget management, facility maintenance and usage, and student engagement at the Hulili Ke Kukui Hawaiian Center.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Education, Social Work, Social Sciences, or a related field, and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in student affairs, student programming, academic advising and/or counseling, social services, or a related area; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in Native Hawaiian-serving programs as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with Native Hawaiian-serving programs.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and management skills, with experience in organizational leadership, including fiscal/budget management, program administration, and supervision in educational institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of regular scheduled work hours.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated direct knowledge of Hawaiian language, culture, practices, protocols, and values, or major coursework in Hawaiian Studies or related fields.
  • Ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the retention of Native Hawaiians for continuing education.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage Native Hawaiian student serving programs, specifically at the University of Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully partner with student services units in the University of Hawaii System.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with Native Hawaiian communities.
  • Familiarity with Native Hawaiian Student Services initiatives.
