Duties and Responsibilities:

  • *Serves as the Program Specialist (Associate Director) for the Center for Korean Studies (CKS); provides leadership in the management of CKS' academic and research endeavors.
  • *Develops, coordinates, and implements all operational and administrative matters of the Center in accordance with current policies, procedures, and directions. In consultation with the Director, updates internal office procedures and/or revises and streamlines as necessary.
  • *Keeps abreast of all University, State, and Federal rules, practices, and policies which are applicable to CKS' academic and research endeavors.
  • *Works with the Director and Center staff to maintain the Center for Korean Studies building.
  • *Collaborates with the Director in writing grant proposals and annual/progress reports, including for the Academy of Korean Studies and the Korea Foundation.
  • *Collaborates with the Director on coordination and development of the CKS portion of the National Research Council (NRC) and other grant proposals that extend beyond CKS.
  • *Administers and oversees the grant-funded projects in CKS.
  • *Serves as a consultant and resources person to the Editors of Korean Studies and the Hawaii Studies on Korea book series, offering guidance to prospective reviewers in the field.
  • *Manages the CKS' archival and library collections, serves as the primary contact for researchers seeking access and coordinates their visits.
  • *Responsible for organizing, reorganizing, and maintaining the third-floor space of the CKS building which houses the extensive archival and library collections.
  • *Oversees and occasionally hosts the CKS library interns.
  • *Works with the Director, Center staff, and other units to plan and coordinate CKS or SPAS professional events, such as conferences, symposia and special events.
  • *Develops and maintains a database of program activities of the CKS projects, including publications, conferences, workshops, symposia, and special events, to be able to produce an annual report of the Center's activities.
  • *Responsible for updating and managing the CKS website, social media accounts, regular online newsletter and occasional print brochures.
  • *Works outside normally scheduled work hours, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as directed.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, Arts & Sciences, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for grants management and/or program management; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of grants management and/or program management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with grants management and/or program management.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software and databases, spreadsheets and website management software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Possession of strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with from a variety of demographic populations and cultures.
  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Korean Studies or related field.
  • Functional competence in the Korean and English languages.
  • Experience in preparing grant applications and grant reports concerning the U.S. Title VI funding or other federal, private, or state agencies.
  • Experience traveling extensively and/or living in Korea.
  • Familiarity of University of Hawaii (UH), Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH), and/or University of Hawaii Foundation (UHF) policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with UH, RCUH, UHF financial management systems and/or facilities management systems.
