Stevenson Middle School - Literacy Specialist Position

Stevenson Middle is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Middle School Teacher Literacy Specialist to play a pivotal role in fostering a school-wide culture of literacy. This individual will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to enhance literacy instruction, implement effective interventions, and promote a love of reading and writing across all content areas in our middle school. The Literacy Specialist will serve as a resource and coach, providing expertise in evidence-based literacy practices and supporting the academic success of all students.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Instructional Leadership and Coaching:
  2. Collaborate with middle school teachers to plan, implement, and refine literacy instruction aligned with state standards and current research-based best practices.
  3. Provide individualized and small-group coaching to teachers on effective strategies for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language development.
  4. Model effective literacy lessons and instructional techniques in classroom settings.
  5. Facilitate professional development workshops and training sessions on literacy-related topics.
  6. Assist teachers in analyzing student literacy data to inform instruction and identify areas for growth.
  7. Support the integration of literacy skills across all content areas, fostering disciplinary literacy.
  8. Intervention and Support:
  9. Develop and implement targeted literacy interventions for struggling readers and writers, both individually and in small groups.
  10. Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and make adjustments as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. The minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian, or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree, with exceptions for designated CTE positions.

If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a program to continue employment and demonstrate active pursuit of Hawaii licensing requirements each year, as set by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program aligns with your teaching line.
