Other Conditions: Extramural funds. Appointment to begin May 2025 or soon thereafter. Renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance, department needs, and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • *Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, serve as the project's Native Hawaiian Partner Liaison and Education Mentor;
  • *Work closely with Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) and Hawaiinuiakea for events where Project Hookui is a sponsor, including coordinating logistics, implementing activities, and engaging with students;
  • *Implement the Project Hookui program and curriculum on the Windward side of Oahu at one high school, including setting up classes, tracking students, collecting data, and supporting student interns;
  • *Coordinate logistics (airfare, lodging, meals, transportation) for project participants and chaperones, ensuring safety and well-being;
  • *Responsible for distributing and collecting forms, sign-in sheets, etc., as per UHM policy;
  • *Serve as a point of contact for students transitioning from high school to college, advising and fielding inquiries;
  • *Mentor Hookui UHM Scholar Awardees during their first semester and track their grades and classes;
  • *Collaborate with project site coordinators to identify Manoa Academy students interested in campus tours and attending UHM;
  • *Update the Project Hookui Scholarship application as needed;
  • *Travel with the principal investigator to neighbor island project schools as needed;
  • *Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required;
  • *Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, social sciences, liberal arts, fine arts, or related field, plus 3 years of responsible professional experience with Native Hawaiian culture, history, and activities, or equivalent education and experience;
  • Broad knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, history, and activities, including standard and evolving concepts and methodologies;
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories related to event coordination and management;
  • Ability to resolve complex problems creatively and effectively;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report preparation;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with diverse organizations and individuals;
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and software applications (Word, Zoom, Google Suite, Canva);
  • If applicable, experience in supervising staff, managing work priorities, and employee relations;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays;
  • Ability to travel independently within Hawaii, meeting position needs, with a valid Hawai`i Driver's License or other transportation means.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in social sciences, liberal arts, education, or fine arts, or additional graduate credits;
  • Conversational proficiency in Hawaiian language;
  • Over 5 years of management and leadership experience related to the role.
