The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL), invites applications for a one-year temporary Assistant Professor of Japanese specializing in Japanese Literature. Appointment to begin August 1, 2025, pending position clearance and availability of funds.

The Department of EALL is among the largest of its kind in the country, offering a comprehensive curriculum in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language, linguistics, literature, and culture. We offer BA degrees in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; and MA & PhD degrees in EALL, focusing on linguistics and literature.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses in Japanese literature and cultural studies;
  2. Teach graduate courses in Japanese literature;
  3. Advise undergraduate and graduate students;
  4. Participate in graduate committees;
  5. Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in areas of specialization;
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Japanese literature or a closely related field from a recognized institution (ABD candidates considered if all requirements are completed by August 2025);
  2. Demonstrated expertise in Japanese literature;
  3. Experience in teaching and service;
  4. Ability to develop and teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels;
  5. Evidence of scholarly activity in the field;
  6. Proficiency in Japanese and English;
  7. Ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Ability to teach courses such as Introduction to Classical Japanese, Japanese film and popular culture, or advanced Japanese literature;
  2. College-level teaching experience.
