Other Conditions: This position is an 11-month, three-year appointment as the Director/Professor of the Hawaii Concussion Awareness & Management Program (HCAMP) renewable based on satisfactory performance and department needs. Should the candidate no longer serve as the Director, the position will revert to a 9-month appointment in KRS where workload (teaching, research, and service) is assigned by the Department Chair. General funds, contingent upon position clearance. Appointment scheduled to begin approximately August 1, 2025 or sooner. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year and pass a criminal background check.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administrative (50%)
    • Administer, direct and oversee the Hawaii Concussion Awareness & Management (HCAMP) programs and staff.
    • Provide leadership within and across education, health, and medical communities to address issues impacting the quality of life for all recreationally active community pertaining to neurotrauma.
    • Expand HCAMP programming to include middle school and youth/recreational sports, in compliance with State Law ACT 262.
    • Lead interdisciplinary grant and project development teams.
    • Collaborate successfully with other COE and UH units (e.g., JABSOM) and with federal, state, and private funding agencies.
  • Research (25%)
    • Write competitive grant applications that support the mission of HCAMP and KRS.
    • Develop concepts and prepare successful grant proposals for extramurally funded research and training.
    • Increase publication potential for HCAMP in connection with neurotrauma and concussions.
    • Manage program budgets.
  • Instructional (25%)
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses via on-campus and a variety of distance delivery modes, as assigned; mentor and advise students.
    • Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in exercise science, biomechanics, athletic training, or other social and human service fields related to physical activity, sports, or recreation.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching; a minimum of four years of full-time teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of professional maturity.
  • Six or more years of experience in the field of exercise science, biomechanics, athletic training, or other social and human services as related to physical activity, sports, or recreation across the lifespan.
  • Four or more years of administrative experience within a large research or training center.
  • Experience leading and conducting interdisciplinary research and training activities.
  • Extensive experience writing and securing competitive grants and managing extramural research and training funds.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring faculty in the successful development of extramural grants and contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with community organizations and state agencies to educate individuals on neurotrauma and concussions.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teaming, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated work in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Record of scholarship and publication commensurate with the next lower rank.
  • Excellent written skills.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in neurotrauma and diversity reflecting points in time across the lifespan.
  • National and international recognition as a leader in one or more of the involved disciplines around neurotrauma.
  • Work toward establishing a center of excellence to serve, educate, and provide resources to neurotrauma survivors which include mild TBI, moderate TBI, stroke, and spinal cord survivors.
  • Direct work or research in multicultural settings with diverse cultures and communities.
  • Familiarity with the Hawaii State needs pertaining to neurotrauma, concussions, head injuries, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Demonstrated experience with national and international communities and professional organizations.
  • Success in developing teams and promoting effective partnerships.
