POSITION SUMMARY:

Supervises daily operations of Aquatics Department including pool maintenance, scheduling and supervising of lifeguards, scheduling and supervising of swim lessons program, and program development and implementation. Ensures the safety of the members, program participants, and patrons who utilize the YMCA of Honolulu aquatic facilities. Serves as a representative of the YMCA by providing quality customer service, while meeting all standards and expectations. Works under the supervision and guidance of the Aquatics Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES:

  • Conducts first interviews of lifeguards and swim lessons instructors as needed
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises lifeguard staff and assigned program staff (paid or volunteer)
  • Schedules employee hours, ensuring coverage of the pool/aquatics programs which includes coverage for shift breaks and scheduling substitutes when necessary
  • Provides staff trainings/certifications, securing necessary facilities, materials and resources to ensure all staff certifications are kept current
  • Informs staff and members of upcoming events, repairs, closures, and other relevant information
  • Keeps Aquatic Director informed of facility, staff, and member issues and concerns
  • Maintains certifications and ensures guard skills testings and drills are done on a monthly basis
  • Fills in various positions and roles as needed
  • Assists in developing, administering, and monitoring assigned program budgets
  • With the approval of supervisor and Metro HR, issue disciplinary action, up to and including termination if a staff is not performing to standard or following YMCA policies/procedure
  • Maintains files on all assigned staff with copies of proof of all current certifications, and CPR & First Aid certifications
  • Prevents/minimizes casualties or accidents:
    • Maintains thorough knowledge of pool policies and procedures including pool maintenance, first aid, and CPR.
    • Uniformly enforces all pool rules and procedures.
    • Follows the YMCA of Honolulu scanning procedures at all times.
    • Remains alert and attentive throughout shift.
    • Wears rescue tube & fanny pack (with mask and gloves) at all times.
    • Sits in an elevated lifeguard chair or patrols at the edge of the pool.
    • Remains aware of visibility issues and rotates positions accordingly.
    • Inspects area of responsibility and equipment upon every shift.
    • Checks pool for any foreign matter on opening, closing and throughout the day.
    • Makes rescues, coordinates emergency procedures and administers first-aid as necessary.
    • Secures the pool area when not under the watch of a lifeguard.
    • Communicates with members regarding pool activities and specialty classes; develop relationships with members:
    • Knows pool schedule (classes and activities)
    • Keeps members informed of daily and upcoming events in the pool
    • Maintains positive relations and rapport with patrons
    • Keeps accurate count of pool usage and record on appropriate forms.
    • Submits to the supervisor copies of proof of all current required certifications for employee file
    • Attend all staff meetings and training. Inform supervisor if you have unavoidable conflicts.
    • Report any malfunctioning/broken/missing equipment to supervisor.
    • Report any accidents/incidents in a timely manner using the proper forms.
    • Maintains certifications:
    • Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer (ARC)/Healthcare Provider CPR (AHA), First Aid, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), Oxygen Administration
    • Certifications must always be in possession as well as copy on file w/supervisor.
  • Dresses neatly and professionally in appropriate and approved work attire.
  • Wears required name tag and staff shirt when appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of life guarding and pool safety.
  • Computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Office and Google G-Suite of workplace applications.

Education/Training:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED/Oxygen Administration and First Aid required.
  • YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required
  • YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor Certification required within first 6 months
  • TB clearance required

Experience:

  • 1 year experience in lifeguarding/swim instruction preferred
  • 2 years experience in supervisory position preferred
