This posting is being used to fill various Engineer positions at the specified location. The authorized level of the position is Engineer V. Applications are being accepted down to the Engineer III in the event of recruiting difficulties.
SALARY RANGE: All new external applicants will be placed on the initial step of the salary range. However, placement above the initial step of the salary range will be based on special characteristics and critical needs of the position, an applicant's exceptional qualifications, the availability of funds, and other relevant factors. Such appointments require prior approval. Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations.
Salary Ranges:
Engineer III, EN-22: $6,712.00 - $7,686.00 per month
Engineer IV, EN-24: $8,289.00 - $9,492.00 per month
Engineer V, EN-26: $8,951.00 - $10,252.00 per month
- Positions that serve as technical experts in a specialized area or program function perform staff advisory, consulting and reviewing duties and direct and work with a staff of specialists as assigned in long-range planning, research and/or development of specific projects, programs and functions.
- Supervisory positions initially review projects received, plan methods of approach and make work assignments to employees supervised for most effective use of abilities and time; keep informed on latest developments in the area of specialization and advise employees supervised of current data; solve engineering problems referred for help, advising on appropriate methods and techniques to be used and applicability of precedents, but recognizing when problems should be referred to other engineers or higher authority; ensure coordination of the work with related projects both within and outside the section; review technical reports, project data and completed work submitted by subordinates for technical accuracy, adequacy, validity of conclusions, conformance to policies and regulations, consistency of test results and feasibility of recommendations made; recommend priority and duration of assigned work; prepare budget estimates for major and long-range projects; perform personnel management functions such as selecting employees and evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action as required, and training new employees in the methods and techniques to be followed in accomplishing assignments; initiate and prepare technical reports and correspondence.
Basic Education/Experience Requirements: All applicants must meet one of the requirements specified in A, B or C below:A. Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university. Note: For some positions, graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in physics, mathematics or chemistry may be accepted as qualifying, provided the applicant has had at least 15 credits in engineering sciences, common to all engineering disciplines.
B. Administrative, professional or technical experience involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering including physics, chemistry, mathematics through integral calculus and engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, strength of material, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering drawing and other specialized courses to one of the branches of engineering. Such experience must be substantially equivalent to the knowledge and understanding gained by completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor's degree in engineering; or,
C. A combination of college training in engineering and experience mentioned in B above substantively equivalent to completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor's degree in engineering.

*For the Engineers IV and V levels, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level.**For the Engineer V level, supervisory potential rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted.Quality of Experience: For the Engineers IV and V levels, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level. The applicant's record of experience and education must show that the applicant has the ability to perform efficiently the duties of the position.Professional Engineering License Requirement: For the Engineer IV and higher levels, applicants must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer.Driver's License Requirement: Applicant must have a current, valid driver's license.Requirements: Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.
Temporary Assignment: Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below:- A copy of the applicant's TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report;
- A signed letter from the applicant's supervisor that includes the applicant's name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked;
- Copies of the applicant's signed SF-10 Forms.
