Job Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide services for the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries to HPU student athletes. They will assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the day-to-day operations of the athletic training department to include, but not limited to, appropriate application of emergency procedures, providing first aid, documentation of care, and communication with coaches and physicians. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist the Head Athletic Trainer in providing proper coverage for all HPU athletic events and athletic training room supervision. They will provide practice, game, and travel coverage for assigned sport(s). As the Strength & Conditioning Coach for all sports, you will also be expected to: provide weight room orientation for athletes, provide training and supervision in the weight room, and monitor 'open gym' as needed. Additionally, provide training for coaching staff and manage the weight room facility to ensure safety for all.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in athletic training or related field
- Certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
- CPR/AED certification for the professional rescuer
- Must be eligible for Hawaii State Licensure.
- Certified Strength and Conditioning (CSCS) Certification or ability to certify within 6 months.
- 1-year athletic training, physical therapy, or related experience at the collegiate level.
Desired Qualifications:- 2 - 3 years' experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics or comparable work in a sports environment.
- Experience as a strength & conditioning coach for athletics teams.
Other Qualifications: - Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break and other holidays, if necessary.
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
- Attend to details to effectively act on policies necessary and appropriate for managing NCAA and PacWest Conference related compliance. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary actions and/or termination of employment.
- Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
- This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle. Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU's Vehicle Driving policy.
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours.
- Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.
- Regular, reliable, non-disruptive attendance is essential for this position as is the ability to create and maintain collegial harmonious working relationships with others.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:1. Team practices and game day events (20%)- Provide coverage of practices and athletic competition for assigned sports.
- Ensure practice facility has the necessary supplies and equipment for student-athletes.
- Maintain phone access list of special conditions among participating athletes in case of emergency and emergency contact for each student-athlete.
- Survey the practice facility to ensure safety. Remove dangerous objects. Notify appropriate personnel of repairs needed.
- Communicate each individual's practice status each day to student-athlete and coaching staff. Observe practice drills, paying special attention to those with a known injury; respond to any injury situations.
- Observe practice drills and advise coaching staff of potentially dangerous activities, or situations when an individual should be restrained from participation.
- Travel to cover athletic competition with designated teams when needed.
- Communicate well with Athletic Director, Coaches, Head Athletic Trainer and Physicians.
2. Weight Room Management & Supervision (20%)- Review all strength & conditioning workouts for all teams.
- Review weight room policies & procedures on an annual basis and update as needed.
- Review policies & procedures with all teams prior to workouts beginning.
- Review policies & procedures with each coach prior to workouts beginning.
- Supervise weight room open gym times to provide accessibility for all athletes.
- Extended hours in the summer are expected.
3. Pre- and post-practice treatments (15%)- Apply various therapeutic modalities, and give instruction for rehabilitation, range of motion, and flexibility exercises.
- Apply necessary protection of injured area, including special taping or braces.
- Clean and dress various abrasions, lacerations, etc. to help prevent infection and to aid the healing process.
- Evaluate chronic and acute injuries.
4. Weight room management and equipment inspection (15%)- Inspect and arrange equipment as needed for efficiency and safety.
- Notify facilities and or custodial if attention is needed.
- Recommend supplies and equipment as needed.
5. General athletic training room coverage (10%)- Assist in the daily management and operation of Athletic Training facilities.
- Refer HPU student athletes to the appropriate medical professional when necessary.
- Provide a comprehensive sports medicine health care service for student athletes in the areas of preventative medicine, injury assessment, treatment of injuries, and post injury rehabilitation.
6. Administrative (10%)- Communicate well with coaches, physicians, and fellow athletic trainers.
- Assist with the management of facility inventory and supplies.
- Preview student athlete insurance policies, and file and submit insurance claims.
- Proper documentation and maintenance of student athlete medical files.
- Assist with the Emergency Action Plan.
- Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with pre-participation exams (PPE's) for all HPU student athletes.
- Supervise weight room and manage equipment in a safe manner.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned (10%)- Assist in the overall function of the Athletics Department with duties as assigned by the Athletics Director or Head Athletic Trainer.
- Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
- Assists with seasonal peaks.
