ZOO ANIMAL SPECIALIST III (BIRDS)

The Department of Enterprise Services, Honolulu Zoo, Birds Section is hiring a Zoo Animal Specialist III. The position performs professional zoological work and supervises daily activities of an assigned zoological exhibit area of the Honolulu Zoo for which he/she is responsible and performs other duties as required.

Examples of duties of a Zoo Animal Specialist III (Birds), include but are not limited to the following:

* Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of assigned zoo personnel in the exhibition, care, feeding, and propagation of birds and the maintenance of facilities in assigned zoological exhibit areas.

* Determines feeding requirements and adjustments in animal diets.

* Conducts studies of birds with regard to such matters as diets, growth, propagation, and relation to the environment.

* Participates in planning, designing, and modifying zoo facilities.

* Conducts training in animal care and exhibitions.

* Trains and evaluates work of assigned subordinate personnel.

Special Work Requirements: Position will require shiftwork and to work any day of the week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays with varying days off. Position will be working with wild animals. On a voluntary basis, serves as a member of the Zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team and, if the situation dictates, the use of firearms during animal escape emergencies. May be qualified to possess, carry and/or have access to firearms and ammunition in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

Experience Required

Minimum Qualification Requirements At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for restricted employment. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited college or university with major work in zoology or a related biological science. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript. Verification Requirement: You must submit evidence of your qualifying Bachelor's degree in one of the listed areas of study in order to be given credit. Please attach an electronic copy of your diploma and/or official transcript which shows the embossed seal or applicable FCE to your application. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for the required bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in one of the listed areas of study. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Two (2) years of professional experience in animal exhibition, care and management work at a zoo or zoological park. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE: Professional experience in the care of various birds. Applicable Skills: Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the custodial care, housing and exhibition of zoo animals. Knowledge of basic zoo management practices and principles. Knowledge of behavioral patterns and reproductive requirements of mammals, birds or reptiles, as applicable. Knowledge of methods and techniques used in capturing and transporting animals. Knowledge of safety measures and precautions involved in the exhibition and care of animals. Ability to safety measures and precautions involved in the exhibition and care of animals. Ability to plan and develop animal propagation programs. Ability to diagnose training and development needs of subordinates and conduct training programs. Ability to conduct tours and give talks to special groups and the general public on a wide range of animal subjects. LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
