Environmental Scientist/Hazardous Materials Inspector

Myounghee Noh & Associates (MNA), an environmental studies and consulting firm is looking for an Environmental Scientist/Hazardous Materials Inspector to join its Hilo team. MNA is a growing small business that values team work, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence in our work. MNA has offices in Hilo, Oahu, and Guam to support government clients on various projects as well as commercial clients.

This is an entry-level position in the environmental consulting field. The position involves a variety of field and office tasks in environmental investigations, assessments, and reports. Under the direction and supervision of more experienced team members, daily tasks may include:

  • Conducting surveys to include the inspection and sampling of building materials for a lead, arsenic, asbestos, and other hazardous materials
  • Sampling soil and groundwater for analysis of environmental pollutants
  • Documenting field activities
  • Using Microsoft Office programs to create summary tables and charts
  • Conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments per ASTM International standards
  • Writing reports
  • Conducting research on environmental contaminants and issues as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

The position requires:

  • A formal education in environmental science, engineering, biology, chemistry, geology, or a related science field. An associate’s degree or certificate will be considered, but a bachelor’s or master’s degree is a plus.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to use a Windows operating system computer, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel at the intermediate level.
  • Ability to obtain base passes for U.S. military installations.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Pacific Region and beyond.

The following are desirable but not required:

  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and regulations
  • Experience with graphics, mapping, GPS, or GIS software
  • Asbestos and lead inspector certifications as well as HAZWOPER certification

The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, communication skills, respect different opinions, and interest in environmental issues. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work independently and communicate effectively with team members.

The position will be located in Hilo. Project related travel throughout the Pacific Region is anticipated.

Compensation is commensurate with experience. Benefits to be discussed at start of employment.
